What employers with veteran hiring programs ask for, and what to have ready before your interview.

  1. Your DD-214

    Have it on hand, or the dates and character of service if you do not. Employers with veteran programs ask for it at the offer stage, and some at the interview.

  2. Your MOS in civilian terms

    Translate the title and the responsibilities: people managed, budgets held, equipment run, certifications earned. The recruiter may not know the code.

  3. Clearance status

    If you hold or held a clearance, say so and give the level and date. For several employers here it moves you to the top of the list.

  4. Your questions for them

    Veteran employee groups, SkillBridge, tuition support, and how they credit military experience for pay grade. The answers decide whether the offer is right for you.

  5. Be ready for video, in person, or phone

    Your confirmation says which. For video, a quiet space, a charged device, and a camera test five minutes before. For in person, the address and parking are in the confirmation; arrive ten minutes early. For phone, a number you can answer at the confirmed time.
